The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC; vww.usgbc.org) announced that its membership grew over the last year by 50%. That reflects a changing awareness about the realities of global warming and the need to use natural resources in a responsible way. Not only does the federal government now mandate green design for all new buildings, but many more county and city governments are demanding green in their RFPs. USGBC pointed out that in 2004 almost 200 million square feet of construction will be certified green in its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED(TM)) program.
