I would like to ask readers to consider making a New Year's
resolution that will help stop the effects of climate change and
save them some money at the same time.
The worst effects of climate change are caused as a direct result
of increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and
the resulting greenhouse effect.
A quarter of all greenhouse gases come from our energy use in the
home. It is a fact that by increasing levels of energy efficiency in
our homes, we can reduce the amount of CO2 released from inefficient
heating systems, poor levels of insulation, lighting and appliances.
If everyone resolved to install one low-energy light bulb,
increase the levels of loft insulation to 250mm, have cavity wall
insulation fitted, or simply have regularly maintained central
heating boilers, then considerable saving on fuel bills would
result.
Like many householders, I have taken the step to have these
measures installed in my home, saving about pounds 250 a year in
reduced energy bills.
For those on low incomes or fixed pensions, there are grants
available to help install these measures from your energy supplier
or the assembly's Home Energy Efficiency Scheme.
For the more dedicated environmentalist, you could consider
reducing your use of the car, increase your use of public transport
or even walk more often.
With more than 28 per cent of greenhouse gases originating from
transport, we need to look to the future and resolve to become more
energy efficient.
